At Fort Street Open Door, we are embracing change to better serve our community and meet the evolving needs of those experiencing housing instability in Detroit.
After careful consideration, we recognized that the scope of our previous in-person services had grown beyond what our aging volunteer base and resources could sustain. At the same time, many of the services we were offering are now available at nearby locations. This led us to pivot our focus to a partnership model that more effectively meets the pressing needs of our community.
Through this new approach, we have identified two key areas where we can make the greatest impact:
Emergency Funding for Housing Stability:
We’ve learned from our partners that an immediate infusion of cash can be crucial in helping people secure or maintain stable housing. Whether it’s covering a security deposit, making a car down payment, or paying off traffic or court fines, this funding can make the difference between housing stability and homelessness.
We are excited to be piloting an Emergency Funding Grant, which will provide direct financial assistance to help 20 individuals or families secure or maintain stable housing.
Providing Operational Space for Nonprofits:
We are partnering with small nonprofits that deliver critical services to people living on the streets—ranging from medical and mental health support to food and clothing distribution. These organizations often operate on shoestring budgets and need a space to store supplies and manage operations.
We are proud to be providing space in the church basement for two of these nonprofits, helping them expand
Your financial support plays a crucial role in enabling our work. By donating online or through mail, you become an integral part of our mission, helping us make a real difference in the lives of those in need. Your generosity is deeply appreciated.
